Regardless of the size of the company, each company has its own business model, business process, and work style. The enterprise information system is necessary to support the company and to strengthen their business. The scope of an IT consultant's activities includes problem discovery, definition, proposal, implementation, and operation of enterprise systems. It is not enough to have knowledge about technology or just programming skills or setting parameters.

An IT consultant must be able to understand the essence of the target company's business, compare it with other companies to identify the characteristics and differences. IT consultants who can persuade from the other side's point of view and with logical support, and implement them throughout the project, are in demand not only in Japan but also in the global business market.Competent IT consultants are not limited to working for IT vendors or consulting firms, but are also sought after as "true change agents" who realize business transformation from within companies.

To make IT consulting your profession, there is one thing you should always keep in mind: the IT industry evolves much faster than any other industry. The common sense of a few years ago often becomes obsolete and useless. For this reason, IT consultants must keep up with a wide range of studies throughout their lives. In particular, it is necessary to always keep an eye on the latest business and technology trends.

After spending six years at a Japanese SI company, where I learned the basics of enterprise systems through large-scale system design, development, and operation projects, I moved to SAP, the world's top vendor of enterprise applications, and have continued the above-mentioned activities for 25 years, mainly with large enterprises as clients.

I have been invited to The Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics to offer a course on "Advanced ERP Consulting" based on my experience. I hope that the content of the course will be useful for building a foundation for young people who will be active as IT consultants in the future.
