Data Science

Summary

Data science is a field of information science that has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for the effective utilization of large-scale accumulated data across various IT application fields. It is a concentration dedicated to researching and teaching the data management techniques and data analysis methods required for this purpose. While database technologies and statistical analysis methods have long been widely used for data management and analysis, traditional techniques are no longer sufficient to handle the recent explosive growth of massive datasets (big data).

Consequently, more advanced data processing technologies are now required in both hardware and software domains.

Target Career Paths

  • Analyst who extracts and makes use of information resources (data mining) and conducts market analysis
  • Data Engineers Capable of Securely and Efficiently Managing and Utilizing Large-Scale Data
  • Consultant who provides advice and guidance on product planning
  • CIOs who enable data-driven decision-making for corporate strategy formulation and execution
  • CRM manager building models to describe consumer behavior and strategies/forecasting models

Professor Yoichi Terashita

My project focuses on researching and gaining practical experience in methods for accumulating, managing, and analyzing data. While traditional database management techniques form the foundation, we also apply new data management technologies to address the recent emergence of large-scale data (big data). Our goal is to cultivate professionals capable of thriving in many leading business-oriented IT companies. As indicated by the name of this concentration, these data management techniques are now referred to as data science, an area that will become increasingly important as the foundation of IT.

Since the era when handwritten forms were the norm until now, obtaining data required significant manpower and time. However, with the rapid development of the internet and search tools, data has transformed into something anyone can obtain easily and at low cost.Nowadays, there is even a sense of data overload.

Incidentally, data is merely a sequence of characters and numbers, holding no inherent meaning. We need mechanisms to transform collected data into valuable information and further utilize it, and many challenges remain in this area.It is also a rapidly evolving field where numerous disciplines—from statistics and AI to psychology and evolutionary theory—are beginning to converge.

Practical application in business can be understood as the process of linking “data→ information→ strategy”.The key to generating effective strategies lies in selecting and processing appropriate data tailored to business objectives. Through the Master Project, we embody this process by addressing real-world challenges as our theme.
