Our university offers “foundation courses” designed to serve as an introduction to other subjects for students whose undergraduate majors or fields of study are not in IT.If you have never studied the material covered in these courses or would like to review it, we recommend taking them during the first semester.
Foundational Course
I’m grateful for an environment where I receive solid instruction from the basics and where my passion is welcomed.
Mr. Hayashi
Graduated from Ryukoku University,
Faculty of Sociology, in March 2025.
Field of Study: Data Science
I studied sociology in college and got a job at a hotel, but it went out of business due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After that, I switched jobs and started working at an accounting firm in Osaka. While working on the “Business Restructuring Grant”—a program established by the government to help small and medium-sized enterprises overcome the COVID-19 pandemic—I came to appreciate the importance of data once again. That experience inspired me to become a data scientist and do work that helps people, so I began teaching myself the field. However, due to a lack of foundational knowledge, I wasn’t making as much progress as I’d hoped, so I started looking for a graduate school I could attend from home—that’s when I found KCGI, which offers “Data Science” as a major. When I explained my goals to the instructor at KCGI, I was deeply moved by how thoughtfully they listened and offered advice.KCGI provided strong financial support by allowing us to take advantage of its own scholarship program.
I had no experience in IT, so I was nervous when I started school.Amid all this, the professors taught us the basics thoroughly and patiently, and through the “Introduction to Databases” course, I gained the confidence that as long as I mastered the fundamentals of IT, I’d be fine.I was relieved to see that there were several other courses available for people with no IT experience.Instructors with extensive practical experience will provide clear guidance on exactly what is required and to what extent.Instructors with extensive practical experience will provide clear guidance on exactly what is required and to what extent. The school building, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, is also appealing; in particular, it offers an environment conducive to quiet study and concentration, such as the library and various spaces that can be reserved for use.
Going forward, I hope to pursue research in fields that interest me, with the support of my professors.I want to take on the challenge of exploring a new field while remaining grateful for a learning environment that accepts me despite my lack of knowledge and skills and reaches out to me with passion.
The Challenge of Moving from Literature to IT: A Path of Learning That Connects Community Development and the Economy for a Bright Future
Mr. Aoyagi
Graduated from Kyoto Prefectural University,
Faculty of Letters, in March 2025.
Field of Study: Data Science
In college, I studied history and culture, and through fieldwork, I developed an interest in community development.History and culture are created and passed down by people, but the reality is that there is an acute shortage of people to carry on this tradition.I decided to pursue graduate studies because I wondered if I could overcome the shortage of workers by leveraging my knowledge of IT and economics to develop systems.I had seen Kyoto Computer Gakuin (KCG)—an institution with a long tradition and proven track record in IT education—in a commercial, and when I learned that KCGI was part of the KCG group, I was told that they accept students with a liberal arts background and that I could study there, so I decided to enroll.
To be honest, I didn't know anything about IT, so I was a little nervous.I chose data science as my major, but I found programming and statistics challenging. I gradually overcame these challenges by thoroughly studying the reference books listed in the syllabus and asking questions of my professors and classmates, and as a result, studying IT gradually became more enjoyable. In the “Advanced Management Studies” course, I was introduced to the concept of “regional finance,” and I feel that I can apply what I learn to community development, which is my life’s work.In addition, KCGI has many students with diverse values—including working professionals and international students—and group work helped broaden my horizons.
In the future, I hope to become a professional involved in community development that draws on history and culture.Until then, I will continue to study IT and economics thoroughly.I think many people with a background in the humanities feel anxious about studying IT.But if you're interested, I truly believe that if you just go for it, you'll never regret it.The instructors at KCGI provide solid support for our learning and show us the path forward.
