NETMundial+10, a conference organized by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee to discuss Internet governance, was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on April 29-30, 2024, with the participation of KCGI Professor Tateishi Toshiaki (Vice President and Executive Director, Japan Internet Providers Association) and KCGI Assistant Professor Tanaka Keiko from Cyber Kyoto Laboratory (CKL), which manages and operates the geographical top-level domain ".kyoto" established by Kyoto City University of Information Science (KCGI).
The Brazilian Internet Steering Committee is the country's top-level registry, managing and operating the domain nic.br.Internet governance is characterized as open and participatory, as opposed to the traditional closed international policy process.The NETMundial+10 brought together a wide range of stakeholders from government, the private sector, the engineering community, academia, and civil society to provide input.Based on the opinions of people from diverse positions, the outcome document " NETmundial+10 Multi-Stakeholder Statement " was released on the last day of the conference.After participating in the main event of the conference, Professor Tateishi and Assistant Professor Tanaka also had the opportunity to interact with local youth.
The two participants said that they witnessed the enthusiasm of the country and the committee for training young people in Internet governance, as well as the efforts of local educational and research institutions to conduct various research and disseminate information.CKL is eager to continue to engage in educational activities and industry-academia collaboration related to Internet governance, using this as a reference.
Professor Tateishi is also a board member of the Japan Federation of IT Organizations (IT Federation), of which Wataru Hasegawa, President of the KCG Group, serves as President and First Vice President, and a Representative Director of the Internet Content Safety Association, Inc.In 2023, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Kyoto Computer Gakuin and the 20th anniversary of Kyoto University of Information Sciences, SIG (School on Internet Governance) Japan will be established on campus.Various events were held in conjunction with the international conference "Internet Governance Forum 2023 (IGF2023)" in Kyoto, and Professor Tateishi gave a number of lectures on topics such as information education in Japan.
KCGI is the only educational organization in Japan to manage and operate the top-level domain ".kyoto" under the approval of ICANN, the international domain management organization.With the goal of realizing a safe and secure clean domain and promoting the branding of "Kyoto in the world" by all Kyoto in industry, government, and academia, we are pursuing the public interest and creating a system to eliminate harmful and illegal information in cooperation with local communities and educational institutions.Professor Tateishi offers various advice on the management and operation of " .kyoto".
Among other things, as part of its contribution to the Internet Governance Forum organized by the United Nations, the University is engaged in various educational and awareness-raising activities covering Internet governance knowledge and multi-stakeholder approaches.At the KCG Group's 60th Anniversary Lecture held last October, former Secretary General of the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and former Director of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Marcus Kummer, and then ICANN Director Avri Doria, spoke about the latest Internet governance trends and the multi-stakeholder model.Professor Tateishi also spoke at an event organized by SIG Japan last year with Luiza Mesquita of the Brazilian School on Internet Governance and others, continuing our international exchange.
