On March 12, 2025, the 2024 meeting of the Nippon Applied Informatics Society (NAIS), which has its secretariat at the Kyoto College of Informatics (KCGI), was held in the main lecture room of the Hyakumanben Campus of KCGI Kyoto, where KCGI students presented their research results.
At the workshop, Prof. Shusuke Arai of KCGI first gave an invited lecture titled "Chasing Dugongs, Sea Turtles, and Green Catfish - Biologging to Watch the Invisible".Starting with a project based on a request from the Fisheries Department of Thailand on how to prevent the bycatch of sea turtles by shrimp trawling (bottom trawling), the results of research on dugongs, sea turtles, and Mekong giant catfish conducted in Thailand over more than 20 years were introduced.
This was followed by presentations by KCGI student Mr. Ding on "Implementation and Evaluation of a Flame and Smoke Detection System from Still Images Based on YOLO," Mr. Ito on "Word-level Sign Language Recognition Using a Video Vision Transformer with Transition Learning," and Mr. Hayama on "Prototype and Evaluation of a 3D Sound Generation System from Video Data by Combining Object Recognition and Source Separation.
NAIS promotes academics and related technologies related to the application of computers and information technology, and through activities such as academic seminars and publication of journals, promotes mutual cooperation and quality improvement among members, while contributing to the development of human resources in related fields, education related to IoT-related business technologies, and industry.KCGI students also participate in the workshop, which is a valuable opportunity for them to present the results of their research and receive thought-provoking comments from other researchers.
