Professor Shinji Tomita, the fourth president of The Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics (KCGI), passed away on September 21, 2024.He was 78 years old.He is a world authority in the field of computer architecture research, and has conducted advanced research on machine instruction level parallel processing and general-purpose and dedicated parallel computers, and his achievements have greatly contributed to the speed-up of today's computer systems.We extend our deepest condolences.

Professor Shinji Tomita holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Kyoto University and a Doctor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering from the same university.After serving as Dean of the Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University, Director of the Comprehensive Information and Media Center, Kyoto University, Professor/Director of the Administrative Division of the Center for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences, Kyoto University, and Professor at Kyushu University, he became Professor at the The Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics, Vice President from 2018, and President as of April 1, 2023.
During this period, he has held a number of important positions, including advisory professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, member of the Committee for the Leading Program for Doctoral Education (Information), member of TC10 of IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing), director of the Information Processing Society of Japan, president of the Kansai Branch of IPSJ, visiting research director at Kyoto Institute of Advanced Technology, member of Kyoto Prefecture IT advisory board, member of the Council for Science and Technology Policy Expert Panel, chairman of the Kyoto Prefecture Information Policy Expert Panel, fellow of IEICE, fellow of IPSJ, and others.
In the field of computer architecture, he has been highly evaluated for his research attitude of developing and verifying pioneering ideas on actual equipment, and has also made significant contributions to the development and popularization of this field by organizing new symposiums and workshops and writing research books and textbooks in line with the times.
He was well-liked for his friendly personality, and the researchers and students around him admired him for his deep insight into the future of the times.
