Tharaka is from Sri Lanka and entered KCGI in April 2023 after graduating from the University of the Arts in her home country. His current research theme is "The Role of Mythology in Sri Lankan and Japanese Contemporary Art: A Comparative Study of Symbolism and Narrative Techniques," exploring how mythology is represented in contemporary art, as well as his interest in the influence of anime and manga aesthetics on creative activity.
About the exhibited works, Tharaka said, "My creations are strongly influenced by my own cultural roots in Sri Lankan folklore, temple murals, and even traditional stories that I have learned over the years. At the same time, I combined and expressed Japanese folk art and everyday aesthetics that I encountered through my life and study in Japan," he explained.
As an artist and researcher, I am interested in how traditional images and stories from both Sri Lanka and Japan can express contemporary life, identity, and emotions," says Tharaka. With his first solo exhibition in Japan, he is looking forward to further progress as he continues his studies at KCGI.
