The Kyoto College of Graduate Studies in Information Science (KCGI), part of the Information University Educational Foundation, launched a Space Science IT specialization beginning in the fall semester of the 2026 academic year.By leveraging IT—including the effective utilization of vast amounts of satellite data—and through a curriculum focused on practical application, we aim to foster a scientific understanding of space and help students acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills of aerospace engineering.
The origins of our university trace back to the Kyoto Computer College (KCG), which was founded in 1963 as the “FORTRAN Study Group” by Yasuko Hasegawa—the first female student in the Department of Astrophysics at Kyoto University’s Faculty of Science, who was using computers to perform scientific and technical calculations—and who is now the college’s president. From its inception, young researchers from the Department of Astrophysics have participated in this research group, which has evolved into KCG and then KCGI.The Space Science IT specialization can be described as a forum for exploring the frontiers of space that has its roots in the Department of Astrophysics at Kyoto University and spans more than 60 years.
KCGI has established the Web Business Technology Major within the Graduate School of Applied Information Technology, which focuses on two specialized fields: information technology and business administration. Upon completion of the program, students are awarded a Master of Information Technology (Professional), the highest degree in the field of applied IT.As specialized subject clusters, we offer Space Science IT, as well as ▽ Artificial Intelligence, ▽ Data Science, ▽ Web System Development, ▽ Network and Security Management, ▽ Global Entrepreneurship, ▽ ERP, ▽ IT Manga and Anime, ▽ Tourism IT, and ▽ IT Entertainment. As industry-focused subject clusters, we offer ▽ Finance, ▽ Agriculture, ▽ Marine Sciences, ▽ Healthcare and Wellness, and ▽ Education. In addition to students from within Japan, the university attracts many international students from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa—in part because it offers numerous courses taught in English—who are pursuing their studies with the goal of becoming highly specialized professionals who will lead the global IT industry.
